Wisconsin's Civil War Memorials
Monument Square, Racine

Almost immediately after Racine's Governor Harvey GAR Post #17 was chartered in January 1881, fund raising began for a veterans monument in the city. It was erected at a cost of $8,000 and dedicated July 4, 1884. The granite monument was created by C. Allen Campbell and stands 61 feet tall. There are two 4.2" Navy Parrot rifles at its base. The monument weighs 140 tons. The foundation is stone and concrete and is imbedded six feet in the earth. It is located on Main Street between 5th and 6th Streets.
